December 23, 2017: Tip #4 – Never Underestimate the Power of Singing
This tip comes from Meredith Hamons, Founder and Clinical Director at North Austin Music Therapy and co-author of the new book, Music, Memory, and Meaning.
Meredith says:
“Never underestimate the power of singing, even if you don’t have a great voice! Studies have shown that compliance with bath time routines increased dramatically when caregivers simply sang during the process. Often times, when an older adult “stalls out” while walking, simply singing a song with a strong beat (I’ve Been Working on the Railroad is a GREAT choice) will encourage them to get moving again. Singing is great for easing frustration for both the caregiver and the loved one in their care.”
