Missed the show?  Don’t fret!  You can hear the podcast at the bottom of this post!

This was Show #1 of the 5 left on 1370am, KJCE, before I take the show to blog radio!  “Dr. Mara Karpel & Your Golden Years” will continue to broadcast LIVE on Sunday evenings.  Going to internet radio will afford me the flexibility to bring you more live on-location shows from all sorts of interesting venues.  When in Austin and not on location, I will be broadcasting from the Accomplice Entertainment office in the Frost Bank Tower in downtown Austin, TX.  We are experimenting with a 2-hour show, so that I can bring you even more information, and I will continue to have amazing guests, as I have been honored to bring to you thus far!  It has been an AWESOME two years on KJCE and I’m very excited for the next chapter!  Stay tuned right here for announcements about the specifics as we get closer.

Meanwhile, the remaining shows on the station are all packed with great information, starting with this show, featuring one of my favorite “regulars,” Malissa Schwartz.

Malissa Schwartz, nutrition counselor, coordinator of Total Health Immersions, and juice girl, joined me in the studio to discuss some practical tips for overcoming obstacles to healthy eating and for getting on-track to a healthier life-style.  Stress leads to unhealthy eating and unhealthy eating leads to stress.  In fact, eating sugary and high fat foods often leads to wanting more and more, the result of which is to increase cortisol (stress-hormone) production and decrease serotonin (the feel-good neurotransmitter in your brain), leading to increased stress, decreased sleep, and decreased mood.  How do you break this cycle, especially during the holiday season, with all of the tempting sweets and rich foods surrounding you?  Malissa suggests:  1.  When going to a party, survey the food and find the healthy options.  Fill up your plate with veggies and salad, so that your portions of the less-healthy options are much smaller.  2.  Bring a healthy dish to share at the party.  This will insure that you will have at least one healthy option to eat and everyone is always happy when you bring a dish to share.  3.  Start your day with a green drink or green smoothie.  This will decrease your cravings for sugar and fat and help you to eat less of those types of foods.  AND start the NEXT day with a green drink or green smoothie to interrupt the cycle of addiction and cravings triggered by eating the rich foods.

You can find out more tips for healthy eating and find some of Malissa’s recipes for delicious healthy treats, as well as find out about Malissa’s juice retreats and nutritional counseling, and more, by going to:  http://www.nourishandbalance.com/ or by liking her page on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Nourish-and-Balance/470109436363016.
